Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy in Cheltenham & the Cotswolds

Walk & Talk Therapy offers a different way of experiencing counselling by taking our conversations outdoors. Rather than sitting opposite each other in a traditional counselling room, we walk side by side in a peaceful outdoor setting while exploring the things that may be affecting you.

For some people, being outside and moving gently can make it easier to talk, think and reflect. Being surrounded by nature can also provide a sense of space and calm, particularly when life feels overwhelming.

My Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy is available in and around Cheltenham and the Cotswolds, with the location agreed together beforehand to suit your needs and the weather.

What is Walk & Talk Therapy?

Walk & Talk Therapy combines counselling with gentle movement and time outdoors. The focus remains on the counselling itself – the walking simply provides a different environment in which we can talk.

Depending on what you need, I may also introduce elements of mindfulness and grounding, encouraging you to notice your surroundings, your breathing and how you are feeling in the present moment.

You don’t need to be a keen walker or particularly fit. We can walk at a comfortable pace, take breaks when needed, or simply spend some time sitting outdoors if that feels more appropriate.

Why choose Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy?

Some people find talking side by side more natural and less intense than sitting face-to-face in a counselling room. The gentle rhythm of walking can create space for thoughts and feelings to emerge without the pressure of maintaining eye contact.

Being outdoors may also help you:

  • Feel calmer and more grounded
  • Create some space from the pressures of everyday life
  • Explore difficult thoughts and emotions
  • Reflect on changes or decisions you are facing
  • Connect with nature and your surroundings
  • Feel more comfortable expressing yourself
  • Develop greater awareness of your thoughts, feelings and body
  • Approach counselling in a way that feels less formal than a traditional therapy room

Walk & Talk Therapy may be particularly helpful if you feel that sitting indoors for a whole session doesn’t suit you.

Who might benefit?

Outdoor counselling can be suitable for adults and young people who would like to explore an alternative to traditional room-based counselling.

It may be helpful when you are experiencing:

  • Anxiety, stress or feeling overwhelmed
  • Low mood
  • Low confidence or self-esteem
  • Work, college or university pressures
  • Relationship or family difficulties
  • Grief and loss
  • Life changes and transitions
  • Feelings of being stuck or uncertain about the future
  • Difficult emotions that are hard to put into words

Before starting Walk & Talk Therapy, we will talk about whether it is appropriate for you and what you would feel comfortable with.

It can be used as your main form of counselling or combined with online and room-based sessions, depending on your circumstances and therapeutic needs.

Where do the walks take place?

Walk & Talk sessions are arranged in suitable outdoor locations around Cheltenham and the Cotswolds.

Depending on your circumstances, this may include peaceful parks, open green spaces, country paths or quieter walking routes. We will agree the location beforehand, taking into account accessibility, privacy, weather and your comfort.

The Cotswolds offers a wonderful variety of natural surroundings, from open countryside and woodland paths to quieter green spaces around Cheltenham and the surrounding villages.

The aim isn’t to complete a particular distance or reach a destination. The walk is simply the setting for our counselling conversation.

How does confidentiality work outdoors?

Counselling confidentiality remains important during Walk & Talk Therapy. However, because we are outdoors and may encounter other people, there are some limitations that don’t apply when we are in a private counselling room.

There is a possibility that someone could see us or overhear part of our conversation. I will do my best to choose quieter locations and maintain your privacy, but complete confidentiality in a public outdoor environment cannot be guaranteed.

We will discuss this before your first Walk & Talk session so that you understand the arrangements and can decide whether this approach feels right for you.

If at any point you become uncomfortable with being outdoors, we can pause the session or discuss alternative arrangements.

Is Walk & Talk Therapy exercise?

No. Walk & Talk Therapy is counselling, not a fitness programme or exercise session.

The walking is gentle and is intended to support the therapeutic process rather than provide a physical workout. You are welcome to walk at a comfortable pace, stop for a rest or discuss alternative arrangements if walking becomes difficult.

You are responsible for considering whether outdoor walking is suitable for you. If you have any concerns about your physical health, mobility or ability to walk safely outdoors, please discuss this with your healthcare professional before arranging a Walk & Talk session.

Outdoor safety

As with any outdoor activity, there are some potential risks. These may include uneven or slippery ground, changes in weather, traffic, cyclists, insects and other people using the same paths or public spaces.

We will agree a suitable route and location beforehand and make reasonable adjustments where possible.

If weather conditions make an outdoor session unsuitable, we can rearrange the session or, where appropriate, move it online or to a counselling room.

How do Walk & Talk sessions work?

We will normally begin with an initial consultation or counselling session, either online or in a counselling room. This gives us an opportunity to get to know each other, discuss what you would like support with and consider whether Walk & Talk Therapy feels appropriate for you.

If we decide to work outdoors, we will agree:

  • Where we will meet
  • The length and pace of the walk
  • Any accessibility or mobility considerations
  • What to do if the weather changes
  • How we will manage privacy and confidentiality
  • Whether future sessions will be outdoors, online or room-based

There is no expectation that every session has to be outdoors. We can adapt the way we work as your needs change.

A different way to experience counselling

For some people, counselling feels easier when there is space to move, breathe and look outwards rather than sitting in one place.

You may find that walking side by side makes conversation feel more natural. You may enjoy having the Cotswold countryside around you while reflecting on what is happening in your life. Or perhaps you simply want to try something different from a traditional counselling room.

There is no particular way you have to feel or behave during a Walk & Talk session. We can walk quietly when you need space, talk when you are ready, and pause to notice what is happening around you.

My approach is collaborative and person-centred. We will work at a pace that feels right for you.

Your first session

Before starting Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy, we will have a free initial 20-minute consultation, usually online via Zoom, WhatsApp or another suitable platform. This gives us an opportunity to talk about what brings you to counselling, what you would like support with and whether Walk & Talk Therapy feels right for you.

It also gives us an opportunity to discuss how we will work together, including confidentiality, boundaries, safety and what we will do if the weather or outdoor conditions are unsuitable.

Where will we meet?

We will agree the location together in advance. Depending on your circumstances, this may be in Cheltenham, Moreton-in-Marsh or another suitable location within the Cotswolds.

I will aim to choose a peaceful and appropriate outdoor setting where we can walk comfortably while maintaining as much privacy as possible.

If the weather is unsuitable, we can discuss alternatives, such as rearranging the session or moving the counselling session online or to an indoor setting where appropriate.

How long is a Walk & Talk session?

Sessions are approximately 50 minutes, in line with my usual counselling sessions.

You set the pace. You may prefer a slow, gentle walk, a more purposeful pace, or a combination of walking and stopping to sit and talk. There is no requirement to walk continuously or cover a particular distance.

If you need to stop, rest or sit down at any point, we can do so.

The purpose is not to exercise or reach a destination. The walking simply provides the setting for our counselling work.

We will meet at a mutually agreed time and location, and we can review how Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy is working for you as our sessions progress.

Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy in Cheltenham & the Cotswolds
  • In addition to exercise’s ability to combat depression, anxiety, insomnia, weight gain and other health and mental health conditions, combining walking with therapy has benefits of its own:
  • Being in natural environments helps our nervous systems unwind – we know that being in nature helps to quell anxiety and rumination and can soothe the mind.
  • Walk-Talk therapy offers an opportunity to reduce stress, relieve body tension, improve circulation, breathe deep and clear the body-mind of intrusive, negative and ruminative thoughts and sensations
  • Exposure to natural light and fresh air combined with light exercise carries opportunities for mood benefits.
  • Being in the outdoors with a counsellor is also a fantastic place to practice refining your mindfulness skills, as there is ample opportunity to tune into sensory information from all of your senses.
  • These sessions can help you decrease anxiety, regulate mood, enjoy more restful sleep and more. Additionally, you can receive the feel-good brain chemical benefits of exercise, mindfulness practice and eco-psychology. In the session, you can enhance insight, release body trauma and alter behaviour patterns while verbally processing your authentic truth.
  • Walking may encourage and promote you engaging in additional walks on your own.
  • Being outside and moving while talking about your difficulties can help create distance between yourself and your problems and this can help you relax
  • You choose the location and our walking pace – the walking is secondary to our therapeutic conversation.
  • Walk and talk sessions may not suit every situation, but it can provide you with the opportunity to meet and speak comfortably while being immersed in a natural surrounding that appeals to you.

What to Expect from Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy

Before beginning Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy, we will have an initial online video consultation. This gives us an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling, what you would like support with and whether working outdoors feels right for you.

We will also discuss important practical matters, including safety, confidentiality, boundaries and what happens if the weather or outdoor conditions are unsuitable. Together, we will agree on a suitable meeting place in Cheltenham, Moreton-in-Marsh or the surrounding Cotswolds.

Walking and talking

When we meet, we will begin our walk at the agreed location and settle into a pace that feels comfortable for you. We might walk through a park, along a quiet path, through open countryside or another suitable outdoor setting.

Walking side by side, we will talk about whatever feels important to you that day, while keeping our conversations connected to your wider counselling goals. The therapeutic work is much the same as it would be in a counselling room – the difference is that we are outdoors, with the freedom to move and take in our surroundings.

There may also be moments when we slow down, pause or sit quietly. Depending on what feels helpful, we might use simple breathing, mindfulness or grounding exercises, allowing you time to notice your surroundings and reconnect with the present moment.

A space to breathe and reflect

There is no expectation that you need to walk continuously or talk throughout the entire session. Sometimes a quiet moment, a change of pace or simply being outdoors can create valuable space to think and reflect.

By the end of the session, you may have gained a different perspective on something that has been troubling you, released some of the emotional pressure you have been carrying, or simply experienced a greater sense of calm and space.

Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy is not about how far you walk – it is about creating a comfortable, supportive space where you can talk, reflect and begin to make sense of what you are experiencing.

Are there any ethical concerns about walk-and-talk therapy?
Privacy, Confidentiality and Boundaries Outdoors

Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy offers the opportunity to take counselling into the open air, but being outdoors also means that there are some differences in privacy and confidentiality compared with working in a counselling room.

When we are walking in a public or shared outdoor space in Cheltenham, Moreton-in-Marsh or the Cotswolds, there is a possibility that we may see someone you know, or that someone may recognise me as a counsellor. There is also a possibility that parts of our conversation could be overheard, particularly in busier areas.

For some people, this is not a concern and the benefits of being outdoors outweigh these considerations. For others, the privacy of a counselling room may feel more comfortable. There is no right or wrong choice – what matters is what feels safe and appropriate for you.

Before we begin Walk & Talk Therapy, we will discuss these considerations together and agree how you would like to manage them. For example, we can agree what you would prefer to do if we see someone you know, where possible choose quieter routes, and discuss when we might pause, sit or take a break.

Your comfort and sense of safety are important. You can change your mind about Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy at any time, and we can consider moving a session indoors or online if that feels more appropriate.

The purpose of these arrangements is to give you as much choice and control as possible, so that once we begin walking, you can focus on the conversation rather than worrying about practicalities.

If you would like to explore whether Outdoor Walk & Talk Therapy is right for you, we can discuss your questions and preferences during your initial consultation.
