I’m Not Sure Counselling Is for Me

You don’t have to be sure. You just have to start somewhere.

Perhaps you’ve thought about counselling, but you’re not quite convinced it’s for you.

Maybe you’re used to dealing with things yourself. You might be the person others turn to when they have problems, so asking someone to listen to yours doesn’t come naturally. Perhaps talking about feelings feels uncomfortable, or you wouldn’t know where to begin.

You might even wonder what you’d say to a counsellor, or whether talking to someone who doesn’t know you could really make a difference.

And that’s okay.

You don’t have to be struggling enough, have all the answers, or even be certain that you want counselling to get in touch.

I’m Denis, a counsellor at Acorn Therapy. I offer a space where you can talk things through without feeling judged, pressured or expected to explain everything perfectly.

I’m not here to tell you how to live your life or to make assumptions about what you need. I’m interested in understanding things from your point of view, at your pace.

If talking doesn’t come naturally to you, we can take a different approach. You don’t have to sit in a room and talk about your feelings for an entire session. We can find a way of working that feels more comfortable for you.

Perhaps you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious or disconnected from the people around you. Maybe something has changed in your life, or perhaps you can’t quite explain what’s wrong. You might simply feel that things aren’t quite right, even though, on the surface, everything looks fine.

You don’t need to wait until things become unbearable before talking to someone.

What if I’m not good at talking about my feelings?

You don’t need to be.

Some people find it easy to talk. Others need time to feel comfortable, trust someone and work out what they want to say. Some people find it easier to express themselves through activities or by approaching things in a less direct way.

We can work out together what feels right for you.

What if I just want to see how it feels?

That’s a perfectly reasonable place to start.

I offer an initial conversation of up to 25 minutes, free of charge. It gives you an opportunity to meet me, ask questions and get a feel for how I work. You can tell me as much or as little as you feel comfortable sharing.

There’s no expectation that you commit to ongoing counselling. You can take some time afterwards to decide whether you’d like to continue.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you get in touch.

Sometimes, the first step isn’t deciding to have counselling. It’s simply having a conversation about whether it might help.

If you’re curious, uncertain, or just wondering whether talking to someone could make a difference, I’d be happy to hear from you.
